Product:

Mobile phoneTools V5

Category:

Handheld Computing

Problems:

"MumService Application has caused an error..."

Motorola's Automatic Updates application attempts to write a file to its installation folder, and fails as a limited user.

Workarounds:

While you may still use Mobile phoneTools without requiring administrator access, this error on startup may be annoying.

As an administrator, delete the value "mumservice" from the Registry here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Administrators may still run the Motorola Live Update application to install updates. The current known version -- 5.17 -- otherwise runs without difficulty.

Older editions of Microsoft Outlook may cause synchronization failures with Mobile phoneTools V5, though it may still succeed in copying data to the phone. Newer versions such as Outlook 2002 and later appear to work better.
